Job of the Month: Clean & Stain Garden Decking

Timber decking has the power to absolutely transform a garden. As well as giving you lots of extra practical space to enjoy, especially during the summer months, garden decking adds a beautiful aesthetic to your home and can even increase its financial value. Keeping the decking clean is essential and staining it both makes it more attractive and protects it from damage. In this edition of the Greengates Builders Merchant blog, we'll be introducing two products that allow you to achieve these twin demands.

Azpects Patio & Deck Cleaner
This super-concentrated formula is a fast, easy and reliable way to remove built-up dirt from decking whether it is made from timber or composite materials. It can also be used successfully on stone or concrete, enhancing both its versatility and cost-effectiveness. Just one litre of formula, correctly diluted with water, can be used to treat as much as 140 square metres of surface.

  • First, sweep the area thoroughly.
  • Shake the bottle for 30 seconds then add 200ml of the concentrated formula to five litres of clean water. If the decking is heavily contaminated, use 400 ml instead.
  • Apply the diluted solution using a brush, sprayer or watering can and scrub with a stiff brush. Then leave the formula to act for around 20 to 30 minutes, ensuring that the surface does not dry out.
  • Finally, rinse the decking thoroughly with clean water.

Johnstone's Woodworks Decking Stain
Enriched with wax, this superlative water-based stain from leading brand Johnstone's gives decking a full three years of protection from the damage that can be caused by water and UV rays. Drying to a colour-retaining matte finish that is as tough as it is attractive, the formula helps the timber to resist rotting, warping, cracking and peeling. Supplied in 2.5 litre containers, two beautiful colour options are available: Natural Oak or Chestnut Brown.

  • Before commencing application, ensure that the surface is clean, dry and free from any dust, debris, paint and varnish.
  • After opening the tin, stir the stain thoroughly with a suitable implement.
  • Using a brush or pad, begin applying the formula evenly along the timber grain, making sure that it is worked well into the timber.
  • Each litre is sufficient to cover around 12 square metres of surface. The formula will be dry to the touch within two hours, dependent on ambient conditions. After four hours, apply a second coat and allow to dry fully before using the decking.
