How to Lay a Flagstone Path

Paving slabs, also referred to as flagstones or simply flags, offer a cost-effective, reliable and durable method of creating attractive and practical paths. In this edition of the Greengate's blog, we show you just how easy to process is with a step by step guide.

• Accurately measure the width and length of your proposed pathway. Multiply these figures together to get the total surface area required and order accordingly from the Greengate's website.
• Mark out the edges of your proposed pathway. The best way to do this is by using the chalk line marker from top brand Stanley, which is also available to purchase from Greengate's, your local builders merchant.
• Using a shovel, dig down to between 7cm and 15cm in the measured and marked areas. Do not set aside the dirt: instead it needs to be simply turned. 
• Once the previous step is complete, use a stone rake to break up any clumps in the dirt, before raking the area completely smooth.
• Lay a paving slab down in the prepared areas, working it from side to side into the dirt. Using a spirit level, make sure that the flagstone is flat.
• To ensure that water does not collect against foundations, give the flagstone a slight pitch away from structures.
• Using the butt end of a hammer, pack dirt around the edges of the stone. Stand on the stone to make sure it does not wobble.
• Continue laying stones in this manner, turning them so that the gaps are less than two finger widths. If required to ensure a better fit, use a hammer and brick set to knock off any awkward corners. Keep checking for levelness with the spirit level as you go. 
• Sweep any excess dirt between the cracks of the flagstones: this will help to ensure they stay in place.
• Using a hosepipe with a light spray setting, clean the flagstones. Allow to dry for 24 hours before walking on your finished path.
