So, why do water-carrying pipes need to be insulated? Water has a property that is uncommon among liquids: it expands as it freezes. When the mercury drops below zero, water in pipes that are not insulated will freeze and, in many cases, the subsequent expansion is enough to actually break the pipe. If this happens, it can cause serious damage from leaks and even floods. Replacing pipes broken in this way is expensive, time-consuming and disruptive: by far the best option is to prevent such breakages by insulating pipes with foam.

Step-by-Step Guide

• Preparation is, as always, the place to start. First, ensure that you have enough room to work efficiently and safely. Make sure that the pipe is sound before cleaning it thoroughly and allowing it to completely dry. 
• Use a tape measure to work out the length of the pipe section you will be working on first. Don't worry about any elbows, joints or angles in the pipe as the insulation will simply slide over them, bending as required. 
• Use your figure to mark out a piece of foam pipe insulation at the correct length. Cut the piece using scissors or a knife. 
• You can now press your cut piece firmly into place around the pipe. To make this process as easy as possible, the pipe insulation is supplied pre-cut along one of its edges.
• Repeat the previous steps for each pipe section until it is completely covered. 
• Using duct tape, securely seal any open ends.
