Big Projects for 2025: Top Tips for Insulation
In a recent edition of the Greengates Builders Merchants blog, we looked at some of the many benefits that installing insulation can provide, from making a home more comfortable to delivering massive savings on energy bills. If insulating a property is on your list of big projects for this year then you definitely need to read this article.
Just as with any other construction or renovation project, the process of installing insulation needs to be carried out in a careful and precise manner and getting it wrong could cause problems. At best, improper installation could affect how well the insulation performs. At worst, it could be a serious hazard. Here we share four tips on how to get it right.
Fixtures and Flues
You should never install insulation in a place where there is a potential for dangerous heat to build up or it could create a fire risk. If there are any electrical fixtures such as lights, fuse boxes or wiring then be sure to leave gaps in the insulation around them. This also allows for rapid access to such components in case repairs or maintenance are required in the future. Never block off a flue or chimney with insulation as this can also pose a fire risk, as well as preventing potentially deadly gases from escaping.
Store but don't Squash!
A loft can provide valuable extra storage space but you have to be wary of how this can affect insulation. If you pile lots of heavy items onto loft insulation you run the risk of compressing it to the point where it cannot properly trap air or prevent the escape of precious heat. In addition, restricting airflow can cause a buildup of moisture, resulting in problems with damp that can be an absolute nightmare to remedy.
The Dreaded Damp
The majority of homes are built using the cavity wall method, with the space between walls being insulated. If walls are cracked and are allowing water to enter then installing insulation will not solve the damp issue. On the contrary, the issue will be exacerbated as moisture cannot escape, generating condensation within. Before installing cavity wall insulation, the cavity wall should be completely sound.
DIY or Hire a Professional?
Only confident DIYers should attempt to install insulation. If you have doubts then it's best to call in the professionals. Before choosing a tradesperson, make sure you do plenty of research. Find someone who is properly qualified, experienced and has a good track record of success.
